The owner of BRS, Hywel Blake, began his career in the Police force in 1984. After leaving the force, Hywel moved into security, bringing the skills and knowledge gained as a police officer to the security industry. 

After founding his own security company in 2005, Hywel took over Smith & Co, a security company established in 2005, in February 2011. The company merged with Mitchell’s Security in 2019 and re-branded to become Bathurst Regional Security in 2020.

Why We Have a Rhinoceros in Our Logo

We get asked “Why the Rhino?” in our logo all the time. So, we thought we’d tell you about how this came about. 

We chose the Rhinoceros for our logo, not to look tough or due to any symbolic reasons; we chose it for reasons much closer to our hearts. 

Our founder and business owner, Hywel Blake, has been breeding dogs to be trained in various security and detection roles for years. Fifty to sixty of these dogs have been so well trained in detection that they have been sent to Africa to aid in the conservation of endangered white rhinos. The dogs can sniff out and track poachers and have been keeping these magnificent animals safe from a terrible fate. Therefore, we chose the Rhinoceros for our logo. 

The dogs Hywel has bred over the years have gone on to detect invasive non-indigenous rats on Lord Howe Island, helping to protect this incredible ecosystem. We have dogs that have gone on to become the first dogs in the World to be able to detect Covid-19 and have dogs trained to sniff out explosives, drugs and even truffles!

Some of Hywel's dogs have even featured in a stamp series "The dogs that saved Macquarie Island". These dogs did what many thought was an impossible task of eradicating all introduced rats and rabbits from the ecologically important Macquarie Island, and have been fundamental in returning the Island to an environmentally pristine state.
